The main aim of the scheme is to put in place the highway infrastructure required to meet the planned growth needs of Camborne, Pool and Redruth and help relieve congestion. The transport strategy and delivery of new and improved roads is vital if planning permission is to be received for the residential, employment, retail, leisure and other developments proposed.
The transport strategy has been designed to support the Local Transport Plan, the Local Development Framework, the Regional Spatial Strategy for the South West and the key priorities from "The Future of Travel and Transport in Cornwall".
The main components of this strategy are:
The transport proposals will improve access to the A30 and hence the rest of the country. It will also reduce the amount of traffic through residential areas especially on the A3047, resulting in improved road safety, reduced noise and air pollution, these being priorities as identified in the Local Transport Plan.
Cornwall Council submitted a successful stage one bid to the Department for Transport for the scheme which has now obtained "programme entry" status. Final approval will be subject to detailed design, planning approval and land assembly. In December 2008 the major part of this route received full planning permission, and the final stage of the route across the Red River Valley has now also received planning approval. The project, if successful at the final stages, is scheduled for a phased completion by the end of 2013. Work has already commenced on seperate key sections of the route including Barncoose and East Hill Junction.
