Consultation for Improvements at Avers Junction

Cornwall Council has announced a public consultation over proposals to carry out highway improvements at the junction between the A3047 and the A30 trunk road at Avers, Redruth.

This busy junction provides a key access to the adjacent Camborne, Pool and Redruth area where a number of regeneration proposals are being developed. In order that the regeneration of the area can proceed without causing unacceptable congestion at the junction, Cornwall Council, in partnership with the Highways Agency, has drawn up plans to improve its capacity. The project also seeks to improve road safety at the junction and reduce the number of accidents occurring in the area.

The proposals include amendments to road widths, improved visibility splays, and new signing, lining and destination markings to traffic lanes. These features will provide motorists with better guidance through the junction and reduce the likelihood of collisions. Improvements for pedestrians and cyclists will also be made, including the provision of widened footways and new cycleways.

Funded through a combination of Government awarded Growth Point grant funds and Cornwall Council funds, it is hoped that, if approved, the works can be completed by July 2011.

Cornwall Council has published details of the proposal in a consultation document which can be viewed online at www.cornwall.gov.uk/TrafficConsult. Plans are displayed on site as well as being available to view at the Cornwall Council Offices at Radnor Road, Scorrier, the One Stop Shop at Station Road, Redruth and also at the Redruth Town Council Offices at The Chambers, Penryn Street, Redruth. Occupiers of properties immediately adjacent to the scheme will receive consultation packs.

Graeme Hicks, Cornwall Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: "The regeneration of the Camborne-Pool-Redruth area remains a high priority for Cornwall Council and improvements to this junction are essential to delivering this.  The scheme now proposed will provide capacity at this junction which will ensure it operates safely and efficiently for many years to come."

The consultation period runs from Wednesday, 20 October until Wednesday, 10 November 2010. For more information please telephone 0300 1234 222.
